Rehman wins campaign to toughen sentences for disqualified driving

Rehman has won his campaign to toughen sentences for disqualified driving, after the Government announces changes to the law.

Rehman welcomes today’s announcement (6 May 2014) that the Government will be toughening driving sentences in line with his Private Members’ Bills.

He has presented a Bill in Parliament to increase the sentence for motorists who cause death whilst disqualified from driving. Rehman also raised this issue on many occasions in Parliament. Currently the maximum sentence is two years.

The Church Commissioners have decided to refer the proposed closure of St Barnabas' Church to the Bishop to reconsideration.

Joint statement by Rehman and Steven Marsden, Chairman of St Barnabas’ Church PCC following the meeting of the Church Commissioners on Thursday (8 May 2014) to consider the future of St Barnabas’ Church in Gillingham:

"Following strong representation made by the PCC, members of the congregation, the community and the local MP, the Church Commissioners have decided to refer the proposed closure of St Barnabas back to the Bishop of Rochester for reconsideration.

He visited the war graves at Gillingham Woodland Cemetery on Friday (16 May 2014) to learn more about the sacrifices made by local people during the Great War. He was shown around by Tony Sargeson, Regional Supervisor for the war graves in the South East.

Rehman joined the Big Collection on Sunday (15 June) at the Tesco’s store in Gillingham to help to raise funds for Diabetes UK.

Diabetes is a serious health condition affecting 3.7m people in the UK and around 14,000 in Medway. Unfortunately many people do not even know they have the condition.

Rehman also asked the PM about the University Technical College planned for Medway which will ensure that future generations are equipped with the right skills to succeed.

Rehman has praised the Kent Messenger’s campaign on legal highs in a debate in Parliament.

The KM has been running their ‘High Time’ campaign to raise awareness of the lethal dangers of legal highs and called for clearer warnings on packaging.

During a debate on the Government’s policy on legal highs in Parliament on 1 July 2014, Rehman spoke about the role of education and the media in making people aware of the dangers of such substances.

Rehman helped with the food collection at Tesco’s Gillingham store on Friday.

Rehman helped with the food collection at Tesco’s Gillingham store on Friday (4 July 2014) as part of the National Foodbank Collection.

All donations over the weekend will go to Medway Foodbank and help local families in need.

Tesco is aiming to collect five million meals in the one weekend nationally, and will top up the value of the collection by 30%.

Rehman hosted a roundtable discussion on a new study which shows the environmental impact of a Thames estuary airport.

Today (22 July 2014) Rehman hosted a roundtable discussion on a new study which shows the environmental impact of a Thames estuary airport.

The new research from the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) says that a huge area would be needed to home the birds whose habitat was destroyed by the airport proposals.

Rehman commented:
"This report clearly shows the high risks, uncertainty and costs of putting an airport into an area which is one of the most important for waterbirds in the UK.

Rehman has been appointed PPS to the Minister of State for Education.

Rehman has been asked by the Prime Minister to serve as the Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Minister of State for Education, Nick Gibb MP.

On his appointment, Rehman said:
"I am delighted to be asked by the Prime Minister to become the PPS for the new Minister of State for Education and look forward to the challenges of this role.

I relish the opportunity to support the Minister in Government to continue to improve education and the life chances of young people."
